The spray was visualized using high-speed images of the Mie scattering of the fuel droplets. The liquid fuel was illuminated with a volumetrically expanded laser beam through the piston mirror. The same setup of the PIV was used and only the laser cutting optics were adapted according to the expansion of the laser. The images were also taken with the Phantom V2640 high-speed camera, but in single-frame mode with a Sigma lens (focal length 180 mm, f# 5.8). The images were then imported into Matlab and calibrated using a calibration target (LaVision). The motor components were masked and the Mie scattering images of the spray were binarized with a threshold value. Statistical analyses were then carried out, such as the penetration depth of the spray.de_DE
