COUNCIL CONCLUSIONS

of 8 June 1999

on the integration of health protection requirements in Community policies

THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION,

Having regard to the Treaty establishing the European Community,

REAFFIRMING its Resolutions of 20 December 1995(1) and 12 November 1996(2) and its Conclusions of 30 April 1998(3) on the integration of health protection requirements into Community policies and noting that as requested in these resolutions and conclusions, the Commission is drawing up appropriate methods and criteria as a basis for the integration of health requirements into other Community policies, and for evaluating the effects of Community policies on human health;

REITERATES its invitation to the Commission to include, in its annual reports on the implementation of the previous year's overall work programme, sections on public health impact and to indicate in its annual forward work programme all proposals which may have an impact on health protection;

REGRETS that the fourth annual report on the integration of health protection requirements in Community policies (1997) has not been transmitted yet;

URGES the Commission to produce its fourth report as a matter of urgency;

UNDERLINES that the obligation to integrate health in other Community policies has been strengthened;

CONSIDERS that future reports should follow a problem-oriented approach and focus on issues of imminent importance, taking into account the priorities of the new public health programme.
