ECSC CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE RESOLUTION

on ECSC social research

(Adopted by the ECSC Consultative Committee at its 320th meeting, held in Luxembourg on 28 June 1995, with 10 abstentions and one dissenting vote)

The ECSC Consultative Committee, at its 320th ordinary meeting, held in Luxembourg on 28 June 1995, reaffirmed the necessity of pursuing the ECSC Social Research programmes (ergonomics, pollution - iron and steel industry, industrial hygiene in mines, occupational safety, occupational health) until expiry of the Treaty.

The Consultative Committee,

Whereas:

- the results achieved during more than 20 years of activity have profoundly improved the working environment and environmental compatibility of the coal and steel industries in Europe,

- the results achieved and the network of experts which has been created represent a body of knowledge which is unique in the field and which can be used by other sectors in the European Union and by non-Member States,

- there are still aspects to be examined and resolved which are peculiar to the ECSC industries and which cannot be transferred to other EU research programmes (e.g. the Fourth Framework Research Programme),

Calls on the Commission:

- to provide sufficient funds and develop an appropriate organizational structure to permit ECSC Social Research activities to be continued along the lines of the technical research performed thus far in the coal and steel industries, drawing on resources from other budget chapters,

- to promote the creation of bodies capable of carrying on ECSC Social Research activities up to and beyond expiry of the Treaty.
