This database compiles information related to mining related areas in Germany, focusing on past, present, and future activities. The key objective is to assess the potential for carbon-rich
product storage. Data sources include geological and mining authorities from federal states, as well as (public) resources like Web Map Server (WMS) files and official reports.
Due to the project's German context, the database uses original German terms and regulations, with key details translated into English. As the database was created as an .xlsx and contained
themed spreadsheets, the database has been split into two files based on their main spreadsheets which are divided into surface and subsurface storage in format .txt.
Some of the data were omitted, such as owners of mining areas and similar data that could be relevant under data protection law. In addition, .shp files are not offered in the repository for now because of their size.

Data Structure
The database is organized based on several key attributes:

Type of Mining: Whether the mining is open-cast (surface) or underground mining.
Status of activities: past, present and potential future activities as well as post-utilisation.
Raw Material Types: Categorization of extracted resources, their class and group including hydrocarbons, coal, ores, granite, etc.

Data Sources and Formats
The primary data comes from the respective federal state authorities, with most of the data provided in either WMS files or shape files. WMS-files have been digitized and supplemented using ArcGISPro,
using the WGS 1984 coordinate system. Supplementary data comes (see below) from annual mining reports, additional resources and public services where available.

The database categorizes data into surface and subsurface mining, and further separates information based on the status of mining operations:

Active Raw Material Production (RMP): Current mining operations.
Former RMP: Previously active but now inactive or closed mines.
Potential RMP: Sites identified as having mining potential, but without active operations.
Unknown: Sites with insufficient or missing data.

Raw material types are also categorized, including:

    Solid rocks (alterable/non-alterable)
    Loose rocks (cohesive/non-cohesive)
    Organic raw materials (coal)
    Metal ores
    Hydrocarbons (oil, gas)

ARCGISPRO Project

All geospatial data was transformed into the WGS 1984 coordinate system for consistency across the ArcGISPro project. To load a GIS-Project for visualization, load
.csv table in your project using same coordinate system and. Users of this database can continue to build on this framework, incorporating additional data from federal
and regional sources as it becomes available. The structure allows for ongoing updates, particularly with the potential for new mining projects and their suitability
for carbon storage.

For more details or questions about the data, please use contact-adress of the authors or refer to the geological and mining authorities of the respective federal states.
